Amstar-Clav is a powerful combination antibiotic containing Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those of the ear, sinus, throat, lungs, urinary tract, skin, teeth, bones, and joints. This combination is especially useful in treating infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria. Amoxycillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that works by stopping the growth and multiplication of bacteria. However, some bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase, which breaks down amoxycillin and renders it ineffective. To overcome this, clavulanic acid is added — it inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes and protects amoxycillin, allowing it to work effectively even against resistant strains. In certain cases, such as multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, Amstar-Clav plays a supportive role by making resistant bacteria susceptible to treatment. The medication starts to work within a few days, helping relieve symptoms like pain, fever, and swelling. However, it is crucial to complete the full course even if you feel better early, to ensure complete eradication of the bacteria and prevent antibiotic resistance. Amstar-Clav is generally well-tolerated, but mild side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, or skin rash may occur in some individuals.
