Albecef (Cefixime 50mg Dry Syrup) is an oral antibiotic formulation commonly prescribed for children to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that works by interfering with the formation of bacterial cell walls, ultimately killing the bacteria and stopping the spread of infection. This medicine is particularly effective in treating respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia, as well as infections of the urinary tract, middle ear (otitis media), and sinuses. It is also used in certain cases of typhoid fever and mild gastrointestinal infections when caused by susceptible bacteria. Albecef starts showing improvement within a few days of use, relieving symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, or burning urination. However, it is important to complete the full course as prescribed, even if the child feels better, to prevent recurrence or bacterial resistance. It is usually well tolerated but may cause mild side effects like diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or rash. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur. The syrup should be properly shaken before each dose and administered using a suitable measuring device.
